The Starter expansion is something new for the Magic: The Gathering game.
Much like Portal, this set is aimed at new players.
Unlike Portal, however, this set works with the main game rules,
where Portal renamed some things and changed some rules to make the
game simpler.
So how is this expansion aimed at new players? They took out artifacts,
enchantments, and the majority of instants. This means you get creatures,
lands, sorceries, and a counterspell instants only. This simplification
keeps the game centered on the creature and sorcery game while avoiding
timing rules almost completely.
Starter was printed with white borders on the face of the cards.
Cards can be identified by the expansion symbol on the right hand size of
the middle section. The expansion symbol is a 5-pointed star.
The expansion symbol is
black for common cards ()
silver for uncommon cards ()
and gold for rare cards ().
The 173 card set's breakdown by rarity looks like this:
35 Rares |
55 Uncommons |
63 Commons |
20 Land |
It was released in late July 1999.
The print run is unknown.
