Overview

The Torment expansion set was printed with black borders on the face of the cards. This set was known for a while as Vendetta but the name was changed. The expansion symbol is a snake curled in on itself. The expansion symbol is black for common cards () silver for uncommon cards () and gold for rare cards (). It was released on February 8, 2002.

This set is unusual in that it contains an uneven number of cards of each color. This is the first expansion set to ever do that. Black has 40 cards, Blue and Red have 28 cards each, Green and White have 21 cards each, and there are 5 nonbasic lands. This unevenness is balanced in the Judgment card set.

This set contains foil premium cards. These cards are identical to the normal cards in name, text, etc. They are just printed with a metalic foil finish. Every card in this set has a foil version. Foil versions of common cards appear in the common card slot in about one in 12 boosters. Foil versions of uncommon cards appear in an uncommon slot in about one in 20 boosters. Foil versions of rare cards appear in a rare slot in about one in 40 boosters.

The 143 card set's breakdown by rarity looks like this:
NormalFoil
44 Rares44 Rare Foils
44 Uncommons44 Uncommon Foils
55 Commons55 Common Foils

In addition to the booster packs, four preconstructed decks were available with a mixture of Odyssey, and Torment cards.

Cards were written under the rules used for Sixth Edition and Seventh Edition.
